The Potato Harvest Season Concludes in Northeast Syria

Northeast Syria – Sunday, 10 August 2025 – A total of 534 farmers produced over 1,638 metric tonnes (MT) of potatoes under Phase II of the agricultural initiative, “Support for Potato Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates”. These farmers cultivated 54.22 hectares (HA) of land, achieving an average yield of 30.21 MT/ha, with the crop valued at around $250 per MT.

Farmers received potato tubers and plastic mesh bags. Additionally, farmers were further supported with a range of agricultural inputs and equipment, including agrochemicals (herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides), personal protective equipment (PPE), and sprayers.

This support, combined with training sessions on best practices in potato cultivation and Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), enabled participants to enhance their planting and harvesting techniques. As a result, they were able to increase productivity, despite facing a season marked by severe drought.

These efforts have contributed to improving farmers’ livelihoods, revitalising the local economy, and enhancing food security across the region. Furthermore, the increased availability of potatoes, a staple food, in local markets has helped promote sustainability and stability within communities.
