Deir-ez-Zor Health Emergency Response Plan (ERP): Urgent Health Facilities Rehabilitation and Medical Equipment Provision in Deir ez-Zor Governorate
The recent flooding of the Euphrates River across Deir-ez-Zor Governorate has compounded an already challenging situation, adding pressure on the existing and overstretched health care system, that was already impacted by the conflict, which resulted in damaged infrastructure, deteriorating utility systems and a shortage in medical equipment, restricting facilities to provide adequate and effective health care services.
Given that the flooding has disrupted access to services in some facilities, it has increased demand on others, which do not have the capacity to provide and maintain the necessary essential and emergency services.
Therefore, in coordination with the Deir-ez-Zor Health Directorate and the Ministry of Health, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF), launched an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) to address urgent health care needs through rehabilitation works and the provision of critical medical equipment, using balances under three of the Fund’s projects that are already being implemented, to facilitate a rapid response.
This is expected to:
- Ensure the continuity and resilience of health care services across Deir-ez-Zor Governorate.
- Improve the capacity of health care facilities.
- Facilitate the response to emergencies and urgent needs.
This will be done by implementing the following:
- Conducting urgent rehabilitation and renovation works, through:
- Rehabilitating, repairing and conducting maintenance works in the selected facilities and hospitals to restore safe and functional health care environments.
- Rehabilitating damaged buildings.
- Improving utility and service areas.
- Conducting other essential work to ensure facilities operate effectively.
- Providing critical emergency equipment, through:
- Supplying, installing and operationalising priority medical equipment.
This is anticipated to:
- Enhance the capacity of health care facilities to delivery essential and emergency health services.
- Ensure the effective operation of facilities.
With a total budget of around EUR 1.35 million, this ERP is expected to directly benefit thousands of patients and individuals and indirectly benefit surrounding communities, over a period of six months, given the improvement in overall health conditions in the area.
