The SRTF Wheat Support Programme Delivers a Bountiful 2026 Harvest in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor
Damascus – Wednesday, 19 August 2026 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the 2026 wheat harvest after the completion of Phase Nine of its Agriculture project, “Agricultural Support to Farmers in Ar-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor Governorates”.
Since the launch of the Wheat Farmers Support Programme in 2018, the SRTF has supported 13,135 farmers through 58 Farmers’ Cooperatives. Through this sustained partnership, farmers have cultivated a cumulative 29,798 hectares (HA) and produced approximately 111,520 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat, maintaining an average yield of 3.74 MT per hectare.
This year's harvest represents a significant contribution to Syria’s food security, accounting for more than 22% of Ar-Raqqa Governorate’s wheat production, and over 4% of the country’s overall wheat production.
These achievements have been made possible through the SRTF’s comprehensive support package, which includes the provision of certified wheat seeds, high-quality fertilisers, agricultural machinery and equipment such as tractors and seed drills, as well as personal protective equipment. In parallel, technical training sessions have strengthened farmers’ knowledge, skills, and capacity, enabling them to improve both the quality and productivity of wheat cultivation.
Through these interventions, the SRTF continues to promote sustainable agricultural practices, strengthen food security, enhance farmers’ resilience and self-reliance, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of rural livelihoods and farming communities.
In a statement by the General Union of Farmers, Mr. Bassam Al-Hussein, the Director of Public Relations of the Union in Damascus, said: “The contribution made by the Fund is a real investment in the Agriculture sector, in development, and in securing food security and economic stability in Syria. It expanded cooperatives' roles, shifting them from traditional agricultural service provision to mechanisation and capacity-building for farmers to manage their land. Additionally, this support created teamwork amongst farmers and limited displacements from rural areas to the city and allows farmers to settle in their own lands and villages.”
In a statement, the SRTF Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, stated: “The success of the SRTF’s Wheat Farmers Support Programme reflects the strength of our partnership with Farmers’ Cooperatives and the dedication of farmers across the supported areas. Through sustained collaboration and targeted support, the programme continues to strengthen agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and improve the resilience and livelihoods of farming communities.
This season alone, the wheat produced by SRTF-supported farmers represents a market value of approximately USD 40 million. These achievements demonstrate the impact of sustained collaboration in strengthening food security, improving agricultural productivity, and enhancing the resilience and livelihoods of farming communities.
Looking ahead to the recently approved Phase 10, the SRTF remains committed to building on these achievements by further supporting sustainable and resilient agricultural development in line with Syria’s national recovery priorities. Through continued coordination and collaboration with the Syrian Government, the SRTF aims to contribute to strengthening food security, promoting stability, restoring livelihoods, and creating conditions that support dignified returns and long-term.”
