The SRTF Cold Storage Project Announced Completion Reinforcing Agriculture and Food Security in Northern Aleppo

Türkiye – Tuesday 15 August 2023 – The SRTF announced the successful closure of its Agriculture project, “Cold Storage Facility for Perishable Crops in Aleppo – Phase I” today.

This project aimed to create cold storage facilities for vegetables, especially potatoes, in order to minimise post-harvest losses for farmers and increase their income, thereby contributing to improving people’s access to staple perishable food items in surrounding communities.

This was done through the rehabilitation of an abandoned structure which was renovated into a 10-room cold storage facility and the provision of fixed assets and consumables, allowing farmers to store their harvest and produce in a high-quality facility, thereby improving the quality of produce available in local markets, reducing crop damage and enhancing food security in the region.

This has also allowed small-scale farmers and market actors to facilitate their relations with local markets, while also reducing the monopolisation of private cold storage owners in the area.

With a budget of around EUR 1.04 million, this project has directly benefited potato producers over the past three years. A total number of 3,000 potato producers are expected to benefit from the rehabilitated and equipped cold storage facility.
