Farmers in Tartous Receive Financial Support to Strengthen Food Security and Self-Reliance

Tartous – Monday, 27 April 2026 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) announced the completion of a Cash-for-Work support component benefiting 686 farmers under the project “Agriculture Support in Rural Communities in Tartous”, implemented in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation.

Through this support, beneficiaries received financial assistance enabling them to install water tanks and drip irrigation systems in their home gardens - equipment that had previously been distributed under the project. The initiative helps families make immediate use of their agricultural inputs while promoting sustainable water management and improved farming practices.

For many families, the support represents more than technical assistance; it marks a transition toward stability and self-reliance.

Nabila, one of the beneficiaries, explained: “Previously, we used to irrigate our plants using a hose but now we use the drip irrigation method which has saved us a lot of effort and helped us conserve water, God bless you all.

The Cash-for-Work support we received enabled me to hire workers to help me in conducting the difficult works, including digging the land and making compost, given that I am an older woman now, which has relieved the financial and emotional burdens we were previously experiencing.”

By enabling farmers to cultivate productive home gardens, the project contributes directly to household food security, income generation, and sustainable resource use. Improved irrigation practices reduce water waste while allowing families to grow vegetables and crops more consistently throughout the season.

With a total budget of EUR 434,118, the project directly supports 700 farmers and indirectly benefits approximately 3,500 family members, strengthening livelihoods and enhancing community resilience in Tartous — marking the SRTF’s first intervention in the governorate.

Through partnerships with experienced implementing organisations and community-based approaches, the SRTF continues to support recovery efforts that place people, dignity, and long-term resilience at the center of assistance.
