The SRTF Successfully Completes Phase VII of a Food Security Project, Ensuring Reliable Bread Supply in Northern Aleppo

Aleppo – Monday, 28 July 2025 - The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate – Phase VII”.

Launched to stabilise and improve food security in vulnerable communities, the project focused on securing a consistent and reliable supply of bread, the primary staple food in the region.

The project procured and supplied 4,000 MT of soft wheat, contributing to a total of 6,278 MT of wheat milled. This resulted in the delivery of 5,206 MT of flour to supported bakeries. Over the 12-month period, an average of 52,595 bread consumers received consistent access to subsidised bread, directly supporting food security in the targeted areas.

Through its activities, it supported bread production at multiple bakeries, serving an average of 51,534 beneficiaries monthly and producing approximately 7.3 million bundles of bread. It also enhanced local livelihoods by creating employment opportunities in milling, logistics, and bakery operations, while reducing exploitation risks for women and children.

The increased availability of bread helped to alleviate financial and social pressures on households, preventing negative coping mechanisms, particularly among internally displaced persons. When asked about the availability and cost of bread, beneficiaries confirmed that it was readily available and affordable, providing valuable financial relief; “The bread support has an impact on my family, providing us with part of the food budget, allowing us to direct this money to meet other needs.’ A male beneficiary shared.  Another beneficiary commented, “It has a positive impact because having bread available in the camp allows me to go to work without worrying about securing it.”

In addition to bread availability, the EUR 1.38 million budget project contributed to agricultural resilience by utilising milling by-products as animal feed, supporting local livestock health and broader food security.

With its successful completion, Phase VII marks another milestone in the SRTF’s ongoing efforts to strengthen food security, support livelihoods, and reduce the vulnerabilities of conflict-affected populations in Syria.
