Wheat Delivery for Food Security: Enhancing Bread Production in Northern Aleppo After Earthquake

Türkiye – Tuesday 15 August 2023 – The SRTF Food Security project, “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate – Phase VI”, completed the delivery of 8,080 MT of imported soft wheat to the Implementing Entity (IE), which was procured using the additional EUR 4 million allocated to Phase II of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP), following the earthquake that hit Northern Syria earlier this year.

The milling operations started once the mills started receiving the soft wheat. Moreover, given the increased demand for flour and bread in the aftermath of the earthquake, an additional amount of EUR 4 million was allocated to be utilised under this project in order to relieve the strain added on an already-fragile sector.

This was done to ensure the continuity of wheat milling for the production of bread and meet the overall aim of this project, thereby, increasing people’s access to good quality bread at affordable prices. Throughout this project, bakery equipment is also supplied in a sustainable manner, allowing for an increased amount of milled flour to be delivered to bakeries supported under this project.

With the additional EUR 4 million, this project is expected to benefit around 250,000 individuals on a monthly basis for three months, across communities in Northern Aleppo. This will contribute to enhancing food security in the region.
