Rehabilitation of Schools in Dar’a Governorate (Reactivation)

Following the fall of the Assad regime, and in response to the urgent need for functional educational facilities in the area, the SRTF decided to reactivate this Education project originally launched in 2018, whereby five (5) schools out of

the originally planned 26 were rehabilitated. However, at the time and due to contextual developments and shifts in territorial control, which had rendered the areas of operation inaccessible, the project was forced into suspension.

Under the newly reactivated project, the SRTF aims to rehabilitate an additional six (6) schools in collaboration with the Implementing Entity (IE).

The project is expected to:

  • Fully rehabilitate and upgrade school facilities.
  • Provide a safe learning environment for students.
  • Improve the education sector in southern Syria

This will be done by implementing the following activities:

  • Fully rehabilitate and upgrade six schools, including demolition and construction works, installations, furnishing and landscaping.
  • Removing damaged structural elements.
  • Excavating of rocky soil.
  • Disposing of off-site debris.
  • Installing toilets, washbasins, faucets, drainage and water supply pipes and accessible sanitary facilities.
  • Installing electrical and solar systems.
  • Establishing green spaces in outdoor areas.
  • Providing cleaning kits to maintain the facilities.
  • Providing learning material.
  • Supporting educational personnel.
  • Delivering training sessions for teachers to improve institutional capacity.

This is anticipated to:

  • Enhanced school capacity to provide safe and functional learning environments.
  • Increased school enrolment and reduced dropout rates.
  • Improved employment opportunities for local educators and school staff.

The additional six (6) schools are expected to benefit 2,296 students and 60 staff members directly, as well as their 11,780 family members indirectly through safer and improved learning environments. An additional 111,700 residents of surrounding communities will benefit from enhanced social cohesion and sustainability of the educational facilities.

With the amendments made to this project, a total of 11 schools are or will be rehabilitated for a total approved budget of EUR 959,212.52.
