Joint Delegation Visits SRTF-Funded Rehabilitation Projects Supporting Recovery in Darayya

Darayya, Rural Damascus – Wednesday, 24 June 2026 – A joint delegation comprising of representatives from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, KfW Development Bank, the Municipality of Darayya and the Water Authority conducted a field visit to two phases of the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF)-funded multi-sector area-based rehabilitation programme in Darayya, Rural Damascus.

The visit highlighted the progress achieved under the “Multi-Sector Rehabilitation Initiative in Rural Damascus – Phase I”, which aims to restore essential services and improve living conditions for local communities. Delegation members toured several completed components of the project, including the newly constructed water tank, the containerised water treatment plant and various sections of the rehabilitated public park. They commended the quality of implementation and the tangible improvements delivered to residents through the integrated approach adopted under the project.

Thanks to the completion of key infrastructure under Phase I, thousands of residents are already benefitting from improved access to safe and clean drinking water. The restoration of basic services and public spaces is helping to revive daily life in Darayya, where families are returning to their homes, shops are reopening, and economic and social activity is gradually recovering. These developments are contributing to creating the conditions for dignified and sustainable returns, enabling Syrians to rebuild their lives in their communities and supporting the vision of a Syria without camps, where recovery is driven by local resilience and renewed opportunities.

The delegation also visited the main water reservoir under the “Rehabilitation of the Water Supply System in Darayya, Rural Damascus”. During the visit, project teams provided an overview of the scope of works and briefed participants on the implementation progress. The second phase focuses on strengthening water infrastructure and enhancing the reliability and sustainability of water services for the population of Darayya.

Representatives expressed their appreciation for the progress achieved to date and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration among national institutions, local authorities, development partners, and the SRTF in supporting the recovery of essential infrastructure and services in Rural Damascus.

Commenting on the visit, Hani Khabbaz, the Director General of the SRTF, said:

"What we witnessed today in Darayya demonstrates how investments in essential infrastructure can help communities recover and rebuild. Access to clean drinking water is already improving the lives of thousands of people, while the restoration of public spaces and services is encouraging families to return to their homes and businesses to resume their daily activities. Recovery is not only about rebuilding infrastructure; it is about restoring hope, dignity, and opportunities. Through our area-based approach and in partnership with national and local institutions and our development partners, we are helping create the conditions for sustainable recovery and dignified returns, contributing to a future Syria where communities thrive, and displacement camps become a thing of the past."

The visit underscored the shared commitment of all stakeholders to advancing recovery efforts and improving access to basic services, fostering resilience and stability, and enabling communities in Darayya to move from recovery toward sustainable development. By investing in essential infrastructure and restoring livelihoods, these efforts are helping to create an environment in which Syrians can return to their communities with dignity and confidence, strengthening social cohesion and contributing to the country's long-term recovery.
