Significant Progress Achieved Under the SRTF’s Multi-Sector Project in Darayya

Darayya – Wednesday, 1 April 2026 – The SRTF is pleased to announce significant progress under Phase I of its project, “Multi-Sector Rehabilitation Initiative in Rural Damascus”. To date, two of the project’s three components have been successfully completed, marking an important milestone in improving essential services in Darayya.

The first component focused on the rehabilitation of three water closets and an administrative room. Works included tiling, plastering, installation of doors and windows, painting, plumbing, and electrical systems. In addition, photovoltaic solar panels were installed to ensure a reliable power supply. Accessibility features, including ramps and tailored toilet chairs, were also incorporated to support persons with disabilities.

The second component involved the rehabilitation of a 500 m³ elevated water tank, supported by a reverse osmosis (RO) treatment system, alongside the installation of a solar energy system and the rehabilitation of a local well. This system currently enables the discharge of approximately 14 m³/h of potable water. To enhance operational stability, three underground tanks were constructed for the storage of raw, treated, and rejected water. Notably, rejected water will be reused for other purposes. The water pumping and purification plant has undergone testing with positive results and will be operating through a hybrid solar-grid energy system.

Meanwhile, implementation of the third component is underway. Initial works have included the removal of unsafe structures and the rehabilitation of key facilities within the public park, supported through Cash-for-Work opportunities for community members. A landscape design inspired by Darayya’s cultural heritage has been developed, with remaining rehabilitation activities scheduled for completion in the coming weeks.

On this occasion, SRTF Director General Eng. Hani Khabbaz stated: “Progress in Darayya demonstrates the SRTF’s firm commitment to delivering integrated, sustainable recovery interventions that are firmly rooted in community priorities. Through restoring critical water infrastructure, revitalising public spaces, and creating livelihood opportunities, this project goes beyond service delivery. It helps restore dignity, strengthen social cohesion, and support the gradual recovery of everyday life.

Building on the achievements of Phase I, the SRTF will continue advancing a comprehensive, area-based recovery approach in Darayya, ensuring that future interventions further reinforce essential infrastructure, enhance local resilience, and contribute to long-term stability.

These combined efforts represent an integrated, sustainable, and environmentally conscious approach to restoring access to essential services. The project contributes to improved living conditions, strengthened social cohesion, and enhanced community wellbeing, supporting the area’s broader early recovery.

With a budget of approximately EUR 767,800, the project is expected to directly benefit at least 80,000 individuals.
