The SRTF Approves a Fourth Phase of a Health Project in Northeast Syria

Deir-ez-Zor – Wednesday, 14 May 2025 – The SRTF approved Phase IV of the Health project “Primary and Secondary Health Care for Conflict-Affected Populations through Piloting Sustainable Health Solutions in Deir-ez-Zor”.

Based on the accomplishments and success of its previous phases and the increasing challenges individuals continue to face in accessing primary health care in Deir-ez-Zor, this phase aims to improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of the provision of health services in the area.

This will be done through firstly; enhancing patients’ access to essential treatments and diagnostic testing, by providing primary consultations, emergency medical services, critical and inpatient care and kidney dialysis services. Secondly, improving operational efficiency through piloting cost reduction and revenue generating measures at the community and facility levels, by promoting health awareness and community engagement, promoting remote and in-person training for health care workers, providing psychosocial support, piloting a sustainable healthcare financing programme using a Family Health Care Card system and establishing an electronic medical records system. Finally, enhancing the resilience of health systems to protecting public health and the environment, while reducing the risk of infections and injuries for healthcare workers, patients and the public, by establishing a medical waste management system, strengthening infection prevention and control protocols and piloting a sustainable funding model for the waste management plant.

With a budget of around EUR 1.08 million, this project is expected to directly benefit 53,989 patients and their 269,945 family members indirectly, while indirectly benefitting over 719,000 individuals including internally displaced people and host community members in surrounding areas. This will ensure health conditions and the wellbeing of residents are improved within the community.
