Access to Reliable Water Secured Through New Project in Darayya
Damascus – Friday, 28 November 2025 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) and the Eastern Mediterranean Institute (EMI) announced the signing of a new financing agreement to rehabilitate and operate the main water supply system in Darayya, Rural Damascus.
This project marks the second phase of the SRTF’s area-based initiatives in Darayya. The first phase, currently being implemented directly by the SRTF, is expected to be completed by the spring of 2026. Building on the lessons and successes of this initial phase, the new agreement with EMI will further strengthen the community’s water infrastructure.
The project aims to restore the operational capacity of Darayya’s main water system through the rehabilitation and reactivation of key facilities. Planned interventions include the restoration of wells, the rehabilitation of an underground reservoir, the installation of a reverse osmosis water treatment unit, and the integration of a solar-powered pumping system to ensure reliable, energy-efficient water delivery.
Mr. Safwan Mouaket stated: “We are delighted to partner with the SRTF on this project. Drawing on our extensive experience supporting communities affected by conflict and restoring essential services, we understand the transformative impact that reliable access to clean water can have. We are proud to contribute to this vital initiative, which will enhance both the health and resilience of the community. We remain committed to delivering the project in line with the SRTF’s vision and objectives.”
The SRTF Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz commented, saying: “This new phase demonstrates the Fund’s ongoing commitment to restoring essential services and strengthening the quality and reliability of water in Darayya, where such support is urgently needed. By restoring wells, rehabilitating the underground reservoir, installing a centralised water treatment unit, and integrating a solar-powered pumping system, we are improving water quality and supply while supporting better health outcomes and the resilience of the local community. Building on the first phase of our area-based initiatives, this phase will help secure a sustainable and reliable water infrastructure for the long term. We look forward to the lasting positive impact this project will bring, promoting environmentally friendly, sustainable solutions that benefit the community.”
This project is expected to directly benefit 150,000 community residents, improving overall health conditions and households’ resilience in the area. Through such partnerships, the Fund looks forward to achieving long-lasting change, allowing families to grow healthier and securing a sustainable and reliable water infrastructure in the long term.
