The SRTF Brings Reliable, Green Power to Water Supply in Rural Northern Aleppo

Aleppo – Monday, 11 August 2025 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its project, “Sustainable Energy Solar System for Water Pumping Stations in Rural Areas of Northern Aleppo – Phase I,” with a final budget of EUR 1.77 million.

The onset of conflict in Northern Aleppo caused severe damage to the region’s main energy infrastructure, resulting in a 75% loss in power generation capacity. This led to sporadic electricity supply, dependence on costly privately-owned diesel generators, and higher water prices due to pumping shortages.

In response, the SRTF launched this initiative to install sustainable, renewable hybrid solar systems at seven existing water pumping stations, replacing diesel generators with a more reliable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly energy source.

The project was implemented in two phases:

  • Design phase – In consultation with a photovoltaic (PV) expert, tailored solar power system designs were prepared for each station.
  • Implementation phase – Activities included procuring required materials, installing solar power components, and carrying out essential civil, mechanical, and electrical works such as repairing control rooms, constructing protective fencing, and laying concrete foundations for solar panel frames. Technical assistance and training were also provided, equipping local staff with the skills and tools needed for ongoing operation and maintenance.

Operating an average of 9.5 hours per day, seven days a week, the new systems now provide a consistent water supply to approximately 42,400 households, around 254,400 people, while significantly reducing operational costs, diesel consumption, and carbon emissions.

The SRTF Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, stated: This project is a vital step towards strengthening community resilience and improving essential services. By replacing diesel generators with solar power, we reduce costs, enhance water supply reliability, and promote environmental sustainability, critical for the long-term well-being of thousands of households.

This initiative embodies the SRTF’s holistic approach: addressing urgent operational needs while building sustainable infrastructure, enhancing local capacity, and laying the groundwork for long-term community development.
