The SRTF Launches An Emergency Health Response Plan (ERP) in Deir-ez-Zor to Address Urgent Flood-Related Needs
Damascus - Sunday 28, June 2026 – In response to the recent flooding of the Euphrates River across Deir-ez-Zor Governorate, which has placed additional strain on an already overstretched healthcare system, the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF), in coordination with the Deir-ez-Zor Health Directorate and the Syrian Ministry of Health, has launched a new Emergency Response Plan (ERP) to rehabilitate urgent health facilities and provide critical medical equipment across the governorate.
The flooding has compounded years of damage caused by conflict, which severely impacted health infrastructure, weakened utility systems, and created significant shortages in medical equipment. With several health facilities disrupted or partially inaccessible, demand has sharply increased on other facilities that lack the capacity to sustain essential and emergency healthcare services.
To address these urgent needs, the SRTF will mobilise approximately EUR 1.35 million through balances under three ongoing Fund-supported projects to ensure a rapid and effective response. The six-month intervention aims to strengthen the resilience and continuity of healthcare services and improve the capacity of health facilities to respond to emergencies and urgent medical needs.
The ERP will focus on; conducting urgent rehabilitation, repair, and maintenance works in selected hospitals and health facilities to restore safe and functional healthcare environments; rehabilitating damaged buildings and improving utility and service areas; carrying out essential works to ensure facilities operate effectively; and supplying, installing, and operationalising priority emergency medical equipment.
The intervention is expected to directly benefit thousands of patients and individuals while also improving healthcare access for surrounding communities across Deir-ez-Zor Governorate.
During his field visits that included Deir-ez-Zor, alongside visits to Raqqa, Aleppo, and Idlib in the past weeks, the Director General witnessed first-hand the urgent condition of several health facilities in Deir-ez Zor and the pressing need for rehabilitation and equipment support, which reinforced the importance of launching this emergency intervention without delay. Commenting on the launch, the DG said:
"Our field visits across Syria continue to reaffirm the importance of designing interventions based on real and urgent needs. What we witnessed in Deir-ez-Zor highlighted the critical pressure on the health sector, particularly following the recent floods. Through this Emergency Response Plan, we are committed to ensuring that health facilities can continue delivering essential services and that our interventions contribute to recovery, stability and dignified living conditions for communities across Syria."
The SRTF remains committed to working closely with local authorities, technical directorates and communities to ensure that its interventions support recovery priorities and contribute to improving essential services in line with Syria’s broader recovery and stabilisation efforts.
