Support to Livestock Farmers in Ar-Raqqa Governorate – Phase I

The agriculture sector remains one of the most affected and important sectors in Syria due to its strong relationship with the economy and livelihoods. In response to the ongoing need for this sector’s rehabilitation, the SRTF approved a new intervention, “Support to Livestock Farmers in Ar-Raqqa Governorate – Phase I”, which focuses on providing targeted farmers with necessary livestock and veterinary inputs to improve breeders’ livestock production and economic resources. The distribution of veterinary inputs will be done applying the cost recovery approach, were 30% of the input cost is covered by the project grant and 70% of the input cost is paid by the beneficiaries.

To achieve this main objective, the SRTF plans to:

  • Work with 29 farmer/breeder cooperatives that support 3,583 farmers and breeders.
  • Support 2,500 livestock breeders with livestock inputs and services to decrease costs and increase production and households’ economic resources.
  • Provide technical training via Remote Technical Assistance (RTA) to 500 farmers on topics related to livestock issues.
  • Train 100 local technicians via RTA to help their communities solve problems related to veterinary livestock production.
  • Distribute concentrated fodder and animal medicines to breeders.
  • Establish three veterinary clinics and laboratories and one mobile vet clinic that will serve breeders and strengthen animal health.
  • Set up veterinary services and inoculate 60,000 animals with vaccinations.

By the end of this intervention, the SRTF expects to achieve the following results:

  • Cooperatives are able to fully assist their members by providing inputs, services, and technical assistance; and
  • Veterinarians and technicians improved their capacity to assist the cooperatives and breeders.

With a total budget of EUR 1 million and a six-month duration, this intervention is expected to benefit 3,583 farmers and 100 local veterinarians and technicians and around 29,500 people will indirectly benefit from the improved economic circumstances.
