The SRTF Extends its “Solid Waste Management in Deir Ez-zor” to a Second Phase

Deir Ez-zor – Tuesday, 4th  February 2020 – After the success of the first phase of intervention: “Provision of Solid Waste Management Services in Deir Ez-zor”, the SRTF approved the launch of Phase II of the same intervention with a total allocated budget of EUR 2,69 million.  The newly approved intervention brings the SRTF’s stabilization program to a total of EUR 52,66 million.

As with Phase I, and in light of the activities and thorough assessments carried on the ground, Phase II will carry out solid waste clearance and debris removal from 90 sites including 65 schools ten water storage structures, five hospitals and clinics and ten other public buildings. In total, 21 towns and villages were identified as part for the new phase which will benefit from the project’s activities. The project’s scope includes rehabilitation of dumpsites in nine villages. Moreover, the intervention will offer cash-for-work opportunities to support the workflow and increase people’s livelihoods. 

In terms of beneficiaries, around 36,400 students in 65 schools will directly benefit from a safer educational environment as a result of this intervention, and 381,197 residents of 9 towns and villages will benefit from restored solid waste management and safe disposal services. In addition to the aforementioned, it is estimated that 321 households will benefit from cash-for-work programme opportunities.

The SRTF Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz expressed his optimism in a statement: “Phase II is a result of the success of the first phase,  and is statement of our determination and ability to bring about real change and true stability to people’s lives recovering from the terror of Daesh.”
