The SRTF Expands Operations to Damascus with New Health Project
Damascus – Monday, 29 September 2025 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF), in partnership with its Implementing Partner, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), announced today the launch of a new project titled “Enhancing Access to Safe, Quality Dialysis Care in Syria.” The initiative aims to address the urgent shortage of dialysis services in Aleppo and, for the first time, in Damascus, where patients face increasing challenges in accessing life-saving treatment.
With a budget of approximately EUR 926,000, the project will rehabilitate and equip two dialysis units—one in Aleppo and one in Damascus, while providing essential medicines, consumables, and dialysis kits. It will also strengthen infection prevention measures, build staff capacity, and establish quality standards to ensure the sustainability of dialysis care. Over its 15-month duration, the project will provide around 18,000 haemodialysis sessions, directly benefitting 250 patients each month and indirectly supporting more than 1,250 individuals.
Mr. David Lillie, Executive Director of the SAMS, said: “Through this project, SAMS is honoured to bring critical dialysis care to communities in Aleppo and Damascus, where patients have long struggled to access treatment. By combining improved infrastructure with training for healthcare providers, we aim to ensure not only immediate relief but also a stronger foundation for sustainable, high-quality renal care in the future.”
Eng. Hani Khabbaz, Director General of the SRTF, said: “This project represents a critical step in expanding access to essential healthcare services in Syria. In coordination with the Syrian Ministry of Health, the SRTF-funded project will address both infrastructure and workforce needs, while ensuring the delivery of thousands of dialysis sessions. We are not only saving lives but also laying the foundation for stronger, more resilient healthcare systems that serve communities in the long term.”
This initiative reflects the SRTF’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Syria by responding to urgent medical needs, strengthening service quality, and empowering local healthcare providers to offer sustainable solutions.
