Darayya City Council and the SRTF Inaugurate the Little Village Park in Darayya, Marking A Significant Milestone in the City's Recovery
Darayya - Sunday, 6 September 2026 - In cooperation and coordination with the Darayya City Council and the relevant authorities, Little Village Park in Darayya was officially reopened following its rehabilitation and restoration by the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF). The project has restored this much-loved and safe space for families, children and members of the local community, with the attendance of representatives of the Darayya District Administration, the city’s Water Directorate, and a number of other relevant entities.
The Darayya City Council and the SRTF hosted the opening ceremony, attended by representatives of the Darayya Area Administration, the city’s Water Directorate and several other entities. The occasion marked a tangible milestone in the ongoing recovery efforts and the restoration of essential community spaces in rural Damascus, with support from the SRTF.
These rehabilitation efforts led to a remarkable transformation of the Little Village Park, improving green spaces, irrigation systems, internal pathways and lighting, along with recreational facilities, including an open-air theatre and a multi-purpose sports field. The rehabilitation of several essential water infrastructure facilities was done under this project, including an elevated water tank and water treatment plants, thereby, improving access to basic services for the local community.
In his statement at the opening ceremony, Mr. Muhammad Jamil Madwar, Darayya Area Manager, said: “Today we witness the opening of the Little Village Park after its rehabilitation and renovation. This park and the surrounding buildings witnessed the epics of our people and the destruction left behind by the former regime. Reviving this place is a message that life is coming back to the area, and that we are building on the rubble for our people in Darayya. This park represents a symbol of resilience and hope, a place where residents meet, children play and families enjoy their time. This is a new step in the rehabilitation process and an affirmation that Darayya continues to recover and flourish despite all the challenges.”
In a statement by Mr. Raed Obeid, Head of the Darayya City Council: “Darayya has endured difficult years, but its identity, community spirit and resilience have remained steadfast. The reopening of the Little Village Park does not only mean restoring a public space, but also restoring security and stability for families and children, and it is a place where members of the community can gather, connect and revive the spirit of communal life. We highly value the cooperation with the SRTF, which contributed to bringing life back to the Little Village Park.”
Eng. Yasmin Al-Basrak, Head of the Water Unit at the Darayya Water Directorate, also stated: “The rehabilitation of water facilities in Darayya represents an important step towards improving the continuity of essential services needed by the residents. This project has contributed to the rehabilitation of the water infrastructure connected to the park, enhancing its readiness to serve the local community. We appreciate the support of the SRTF, which contributed to the rehabilitation of these facilities, and we look forward to future cooperation to improve the water system in the city.”
On this occasion, the Director General of the SRTF, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, said:“This was once one of the front lines. This is where destruction once stood, and today and tomorrow, it has become a space for peace and a place where children can play.” He added: “I am pleased to announce the completion of the first phase of this project, which included the rehabilitation of the park, in addition to the rehabilitation of a water well, reservoir, and a water treatment plant, through the installation of a solar power system, the reparation of the surrounding road and the rehabilitation of the electrical transformer room. However, this project is not the end, as the SRTF has already started working on the second phase, which includes the rehabilitation of seven wells and the main water reservoir, and the construction of a central water treatment plant equipped with a solar power system, to provide clean and safe water to the residents of Darayya.
The SRTF’s goal is not only to complete the project, but rather leave a lasting impact felt by the people of every city, village and place we serve, contributing to better living conditions and supporting dignified and voluntary returns.
The revival of Syria, its full recovery and its reconstruction will be achieved, God willing, through the efforts of the Syrian people and the assistance, support and contributions of our brothers and friends.”
This project reflects the SRTF's area-based recovery approach, where interventions are designed based on the interconnected needs of a specific local community. It combines the rehabilitation of vital water infrastructure with the restoration of a public space dedicated to serving families and children, benefitting the residents of Darayya.
In response to the water conditions in Darayya and the urgent needs in the region, the SRTF launched the second phase of its Water intervention in the city; "Rehabilitation of the Water Supply System in Daraya, Rural Damascus", which will include the rehabilitation of a number of water wells and the main water reservoir, in addition to a central water treatment plant, and the installation a solar power system.
The SRTF will continue its coordination with the Syrian Government, local authorities and relevant partners to support recovery priorities and move forward with the implementation of practical interventions tailored to the needs of local communities across Syria.
