The SRTF Concludes Successful Wheat and Vegetable Project, Boosting Food Security in Northern Aleppo
Aleppo- Thursday, 28 Aug 2025 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund has successfully concluded its project “Support Farmers for the Production of Wheat and Vegetable Crops in Northern Aleppo”, an initiative that was launched in late 2022 to strengthen agricultural livelihoods and enhance food security in one of Syria’s most vulnerable regions.
With a total budget of EUR 3 million, the project supported 3,983 households of farmers, of which 2,000 are vegetable farmers and 1,983 wheat farmers, in overcoming the compounded challenges of conflict, economic instability, and limited access to agricultural inputs.
Over the course of the project, 4,466 hectares (HA) of farmland were cultivated, 3,966 HA with high-quality Syrian wheat varieties and 500 HA with diverse vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, and capsicum, yielding more than 28,400 metric tons of crops. To achieve these results, farmers received high-quality seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides, along with essential tools such as drip-irrigation pipes, seed trays, peat moss, and plastic mulch. To further enhance productivity and sustainability, the project also established two greenhouses and provided a pick-up truck to support logistics and extension services.
Farmers have voiced strong appreciation for the support.
One farmer from Qabasin shared: “The crops turned out excellent and beyond what we expected. Thanks to the high-quality seeds, we were able to sell at a higher price.”
A female farmer from Azaz added: “This support helped us save money, encouraged agriculture, and increased production.”
By restoring agricultural production and strengthening local resilience, this project has made a significant contribution to improving food security in Northern Aleppo. It also lays important groundwork for long-term rural development and poverty reduction in Syria.
