The SRTF Successfully Completes Design and Building Works on Two Medical Waste Incineration Facilities in Northern Aleppo

Türkiye – Sunday, 3 December 2023 – The SRTF announced the successful completion of the design and civil works stages of two medical waste incineration facilities in two different locations under its Health project, “Medical Waste Management for Health Facilities in Northern Aleppo”.

Each of the facilities has the capacity to process 1,000 kg of medical waste daily. Furthermore, each of these facilities includes one main incinerator with a capacity of 200 kg/hour, one backup incinerator with a capacity of 25kg/hour, one solar power system to supply electricity to the main power grid, one electricity generator, one electrical transformer, one monitoring and control system as well as administrative and operation buildings.

These facilities will receive medical waste from over 50 facilities across Northern Aleppo, which will be managed and treated. All incineration and health facilities staff will also be trained on the collection, management, treatment and disposal of waste before the operations commence. Moreover, this will contribute to the project's overall aim of introducing improved and new technologies to treat and manage medical waste to reduce contamination and health risks in the area, as well as reduce risks to the environment.

With a budget of EUR 1.7 million, this project is expected to directly benefit around 191,625 inpatients and outpatients annually. An additional 3,550 health workers will directly benefit through employment opportunities. Furthermore, an estimated one million individuals will benefit indirectly from the improved public health safety systems, regulations, treatment and disposal practices of medical waste.
