The SRTF Delivers Third Lot of Wheat and Fertilizers to Farmers in Ar-Raqqa Governorate

Ar-Raqqa – Thursday, 11 October 2018 -  Today, the SRTF completed its third round of distributions of treated wheat seeds and fertilizer to farmers cooperatives in rural communities northeast of Ar-Raqqa City.

Today’s delivery included 140 MT of treated wheat Sham 6 seeds and 140 MT of fertilizer, marking a threefold increase compared to previous deliveries.

The boost in delivery comes as trust and confidence in the process continues to grow. Local farmer cooperatives distributed the delivered goods to members farmers, who will be able to sow and fertilize 2,500 hectares of land with wheat for the winter planting season.

The SRTF support comes at a critical time after a season of high crop failure across the region. Since late July, the intervention has provided 448 MT of critical agricultural inputs to the targeted farming communities.

The cooperatives estimate that 4,800 MT of wheat will be harvested while providing employment opportunities to over 20,000 farmhands.

The SRTF Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, explained that “the importance of agriculture in stabilizing communities that are recovering from the terror of Daesh cannot be understated. These communities have generations of agricultural knowledge, and by providing them with familiar inputs, the SRTF empowers them to revitalize their local markets, practice sustainable agriculture, and contribute to food security in the area. Ultimately, this intervention helps to lay the foundation for a stable and sound recovery from Daesh.”

Worth 4.1 million EUR, the goods were delivered under the SRTF’s “Agriculture Support to Farmers – Phase I” activity as part of the SRTF’s “Filling the Void” stabilization programme. By improving the availability of critical agricultural inputs, the SRTF reintroduces economic opportunities for farming families, restores their dignity, and improves the resilience of their communities.  in areas liberated from Daesh. Upcoming deliveries include wheat seed and fertilizer, plus farming equipment and the rehabilitation of five bridges. The intervention is expected to finish by early January.
