Two SRTF Flour mills Start Production in Aleppo Countryside

Turkey – Tuesday, 13 March 2018 - The SRTF Management Unit announced today that it has delivered, installed and operationalized two mobile wheat flourmills in Aleppo countryside. The mills were delivered under the SRTF “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in Aleppo Governorate”. They were installed in targeted areas in close coordination with local councils and the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).


The two mills, each of a production capacity of 800 Kg per day, began production last Friday, 9 March 2018, under the supervision of the project’s implementing entity (IE). Subsequently, bakeries in a large number of communities of Aleppo countryside started to receive their much-needed rations of flour for bread production.


At a total cost of EUR 5.1 million, the SRTF project aims to meet the high and increasing demand for bread as a result of the settlement of internally displaced persons in the target areas, where relative calm prevails. In addition to flourmills, the project is importing soft wheat to use with locally procured hard wheat for production of the right flour mix needed for dough preparation and baking of the traditional Syrian bread. It is also providing fixed bakery lines, each with a production capacity of 9000 loafs per hour, bread distribution trucks and other goods and accessories needed for production and distribution of flour and bread.


The project is expected to increase the availability of bread at lower and more affordable prices to the direct benefit of more than 90,000 people living in the targeted communities. Indirectly, the entire population of the targeted areas (over 300,000 people) is expected to benefit from revival of the local economy and job opportunities resulting from implementation of the project.
