The SRTF Participates in the European Union’s 8th Coordination Meeting of the Core Donor Group on the Syrian Crisis
Brussels - Monday, 20 June 2016 – The SRTF participated in the 8th Coordination Meeting of the EU Core Donor Group on the Syrian Crisis hosted by the European Commission on Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations in Brussels today. A large number of representatives of donor countries and financial institutions, the United Nations, EU and other international organizations attended the meeting.
The SRTF Director General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, updated the participants on the current SRTF operational activities in Syria. Illustrating the SRTF interventions in six key sectors, namely food security, health, electricity water, agriculture and solid waste management, Eng. Khabbaz said “the fund has made a real difference in the livelihoods of over two million people living in five governorates of Syria.”
The SRTF has so far invested EUR 75 million in 30 recovery projects in the six aforementioned sectors and is moving forward with interventions in the education sector too. Eng. Khabbaz underlined the SRTF’s determination to continue its project delivery inside Syria in spite of the extreme difficulties, complicated conditions, and constantly changing dynamics on the ground. He said: “such continuity was an essential component of the international effort to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.”
The Brussels meeting addressed a number of important questions including, humanitarian interventions and the resilience components of the London Conference, the UN-led efforts for a political settlement of the conflict and implications for the post-settlement phase. The discussions also dealt with existing approaches towards maintenance of civilian governance and state institutions, including implications for the political solution and the post-settlement recovery phase.
