The SRTF Resumes Project Activities After the Earthquake in Northern Aleppo

Türkiye – Sunday, 12 February 2023 – Despite the challenging circumstances on the ground resulting from the recent earthquake that shook Türkiye and Northern Syria, the SRTF resumed activities and strated the distribution of 1,000 MT of potato tubers and 400 MT of fertilisers to support 1,000 farmer beneficiaries under its Agriculture project; “Support to Potato Producers in Northern Aleppo – Phase II”, today.

The delivery is the last of many previous deliveries to support farmers for the current winter planting season, whereby, each farmer will be planting 0.8 hectares of land, enabling them to produce around 35-40 MT of potatoes. This also ensures that farmers in the area do not lose out on income or opportunities for work, given the current devastating conditions.

Furthermore, this would contribute to the wider aim of the project of revitalising and enhancing regional food security, while also improving potato farmers’ and their surrounding communities’ social and economic standards. Farmers will also be trained on Climate Smart Agriculture, allowing them to increase their capacity and improve their skills thereby resulting in increased produce.

With a budget of around EUR 2 million, this project will benefit 1,000 farmers and their families directly, as well as over 24,000 other indirect beneficiaries, over a period of 18 months. The availability of potatoes across local markets will also indirectly benefit around 800,000 internally displaced people in the area.
