An Abundant Onion Harvest Season by SRTF-Supported Farmers in Northern Aleppo

Türkiye – Wednesday, 12 October 2022 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) announced the completion of the first onion harvest season under its “Agriculture Support to Farmers in Northern Aleppo” project today with a bountiful 12,915 MT reaped by SRTF-supported farmers.

Through this project onion seeds were distributed to 500 farmers, whereby the farmers cultivated the distributed seeds harvesting an average of 62.5 MT per hectare.

This project aims to provide agricultural inputs for integrated crop production, rehabilitate essential infrastructure to improve the storage of crops and minimise post-harvest losses, and  contribute to reorganising and building the capacity of the Implementing Entity’s (IE’s) extension services teams, providing them with the necessary training, expertise and resources.

The support will allow farmers an integrated supply, access and use of agricultural inputs including seeds, fertilisers and agricultural machinery as well as establish self-managed and economically viable farms with access to local markets.

Under the same project, around 11,000 MT of potatoes was harvested by farmers in July this year, with an increase in production estimated at 50 MT per hectare. This proved successful as the supply of potatoes increased in local markets making them affordable for surrounding communities.

With a budget of EUR 2.4 million, the project is expected to reach over 7,500 farmers directly while also benefiting over 37,500 people indirectly, throughout a period of 18 months, covering two agricultural seasons in nine different locations across Northern Aleppo. This will ensure that targeted communities are self-sustained and have access to local markets to facilitate the selling of their crops.
