Germany Contributes an Additional EUR 10 Million to the SRTF Efforts in the Northeast and Northwest of Syria

Kuwait – Thursday, 15 December 2022 – The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) is pleased to announce receiving EUR 10 million in fresh contributions from Germany to support the Fund’s efforts in the Northeast and Northwest of Syria, today. With this generous contribution, Germany continues to rank as the SRTF’s largest financial donor with EUR 86 million contributed to the Fund since its establishment in 2013.

A spokesperson from Germany’s Federal Foreign Office commented on this update, saying: “For almost ten years now the SRTF has done tremendous work in alleviating the suffering of Syrian people. The challenge to achieve food security for Syrians, meaning access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food has grown faster due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the war’s impact on the global economy as well as droughts. Therefore, Germany will contribute additional 10 million euros to the SRTF, in support of projects that, for example, strengthen food security in northeast and northwest Syria by providing farmers with seeds, fertilizer or technical equipment as well as training. Our aim is to support Syrian people in need, to help these men and women benefit from a peace economy, and thereby contribute to stability in the region.

Expressing his great gratitude, the SRTF Director-General, Hani Khabbaz welcomed the news, saying: “We are grateful for this generous contribution which comes at the end of a very good year for the SRTF. We are in a much better position to build on our steady accomplishments in key sectors under our Recovery and Stabilisation Programmes because of Germany’s solid backing, and that of other SRTF donors. We advance into 2023 with unwavering will to continue to make a difference in the lives of Syrians who aspire to put suffering and hardship behind.”

With Germany’s latest contribution, the SRTF remains as of the largest trust funds with a total of EUR 326 million in contributions received from all 12 SRTF donor countries. The other donor countries and members of the SRTF are, the United States of America, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Netherlands. Türkiye and Jordan are also members as host countries of the SRTF.
