The SRTF Inspects, Tests and Fumigates Imported Wheat before Supplying it to Aleppo

Turkey – Tuesday, 21 May 2019-  As part of its: “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in the North of Aleppo Governorate – Phase II",  the SRTF Management Unit (MU) carried out a thorough inspection process today for the imported wheat ahead of delivering it to its implementing entity (IE). The inspection included random wheat samples which were examined in accredited lab conditions to ensure wheat compliance with international standards. Furthermore, the MU fumigated and sterilized the wheat in a precautionary measure to protect against pest infestations during storage and before delivering it to meet the urgent food security needs of the civilians in the targeted areas.

Through this project, the SRTF will supply 15,000 tons of soft wheat to the (IE) as part of the Fund's efforts to improve the current shortage of raw materials to ensure bread production and to meet the increasing demand for bread for the growing numbers of residents of Aleppo's northern countryside. The SRTF is expediting the procurement and delivery of wheat.

The project is expected to have significant impact on the lives of all residents in the northern governorate of Aleppo; at a total cost of 6.2 million Euros, it is estimated to benefit 175,000 people each month by increasing bread production. In addition, the project will provide employment opportunities in the transportation, services and production sector for more than 2,000 people in the targeted areas. The project will also help maintain stable livestock numbers through the availability of bran as animal feed, a by-product obtained after wheat milling.
