The SRTF Delivers Soft Wheat to SPEG in Support of Food Security in Aleppo Governorate

Turkey – Saturday, 26 May 2018 - The SRTF Management Unit (MU) delivered a large quantity of soft wheat to the Syrian Public Establishment for Grain (SPEG), the implementing entity of the SRTF “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in Aleppo Governorate”, in two shipments today and yesterday. The two deliveries were carried out across the Turkish-Syrian boarder in coordination with the Turkish authorities.

The MU noted that the two shipments, containing about 162.5 tons each, are part of an import contract for the supply of 5000 tons of soft wheat to be delivered to project targeted areas in the north of Syria. Imported soft wheat is used to produce soft wheat flour, which is normally mixed with local hard wheat flour for the production of traditional Syrian bread. SPEG will ensure milling of the imported wheat at SRTF-procured milling plants and distribution of wheat flour to bakeries in the governorate.

Worth approximately EUR 5.1 million, the project aims to enhance food security in the governorate by importing and installing fixed and mobile mills, providing mills with inputs and support, importing soft wheat, procuring locally grown hard wheat, providing local bakeries with assembly lines, accessories and power generators, etc. Hundreds of thousands of urban and rural families in the catchment areas are benefiting from this project, which is also expected to boost the local economy in the targeted areas of the governorate.
