The Fund Us Contributes Us$10 Million to the Syria Recovery Trust

Washington – Thursday, 8 December 2016 – The SRTF announced today that it has received an additional contribution of US $10 million from the United States of America.

This brings the total of US paid contributions to the SRTF to US$40 million.

USAID had earlier announced the contribution affirming the important role played by SRTF in alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people. “The SRTF is a very effective mechanism to provide international support to the Syrian people, and has already impacted the lives of approximately 2 million Syrians,” said Paige Alexander, USAID Assistant Administrator for the Middle East. “We recognize the challenges inside Syria, but also recognize the increasing need for the important work performed by the SRTF,” she added.

The announcement follows a recent visit to Washington DC by the SRTF Director-General, Eng. Hani Khabbaz, during which he met with senior officials of USAID. Eng. Khabbaz, hailed the new additional contribution as “yet another gesture of generous support to the Syrian people”. He said: “this is the third contribution made by the USA to the SRTF since its establishment in 2013.” The US had contributed US $15 million to the initial SRTF resources and an additional US $15 million last year.

The SRTF Director-General thanked the United States and USAID for the confidence they place in the SRTF as an effective instrument to deliver desperately needed assistance to local communities in moderate opposition held areas of Syria. Worth approximately EUR 86 million, the SRTF projects serve almost 2 million people a year in 150 locations in 5 governorates. These projects cover seven sectors, including food security, water and sanitation, health, electricity, solid waste management, education and agriculture.

The new US contribution brings the total amount of paid contributions from all 12 SRTF donor countries up to approximately EUR 163 million (about US$ 175 million). The other donor countries are Germany, United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Japan, United Kingdom, Kuwait, France, Italy and the Netherlands. Turkey and Jordan are also members and host countries of the SRTF.
