Restoration of Essential Hospital Services and Maternal & Child Health Care in Deir-ez-Zor City
The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) launched a new Health project, “Restoration of Essential Hospital Services and Maternal & Child Health Care in Deir-ez-Zor City” to address the gaps in the health care system in Deir-ez-Zor.
Through this project and in collaboration with the Fund’s partners, the SRTF aims to support the recovery of the health care system in Deir-ez-Zor by rehabilitating and reactivating two public facilities.
This is expected to:
- Restore safe functional and publicly managed health services.
- Rehabilitate and operationalise a critical surgical hospital to ensure the continuous delivery of life-saving services.
- Restore maternal and paediatric care capacity through the rehabilitation of a specialised hospital.
- Reinforce national health recovery priorities.
- Reduce preventable morbidity and mortality.
- Rebuild community confidence in the public health care system.
This will be achieved by implementing the following:
- Strengthening the operational capacity of Deir-ez-Zor National Hospital by:
- Rehabilitating critical departments, including:
- The renovation of the General Surgery Department, consisting of civil, sanitary and electrical works, reparation of damaged walls and flooring, the replacement of damaged fixtures and improving infection control measures through better ventilation systems.
- The renovation of the Outpatient Clinics Department, through minor construction, painting and reorganisation works, to enhance patient flow and improve visitors’ access.
- Improving infrastructure, through:
- The provision of essential non-medical furniture and furnishings.
- Procuring and installing essential and specialised medical equipment.
- Supporting the Central Laboratory through the provision of essential reagents, consumables and diagnostic equipment.
- Ensuring the continuous delivery of essential medical services, through:
- The provision of essential medication and medical consumables for six months to address shortages and maintaining service delivery.
- Rehabilitating critical departments, including:
- Rehabilitating the Maternity and Paediatric Hospital, through:
- Conducting comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction work based on an engineering assessment, to include civil, electrical, mechanical and sanitary work.
- Restoring key hospital departments, including inpatient wards, operating theatres, emergency units and administrative offices to enable full functionality and safe service delivery.
- Coordinating with the Deir-ez-Zor Department of Health to facilitate post-rehabilitation operations.
This is anticipated to:
- Improve access to quality healthcare for approximately 500,000 people in Deir-ez-Zor Governorate.
- Enhance diagnostic and surgical capacity in the city of Deir-ez-Zor.
- Increase confidence of communities in public health care services.
- Reduce referrals outside the governorate.
With a budget of around EUR 1.30 million, the project will directly benefit at least 52,200 individuals as well as around 261,000 individuals indirectly over a period of nine months in addition to six months for post implementation monitoring and evaluation.
