Multi-Sector Rehabilitation Initiative in Jisr-Ash-Shugur
The Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a new joint multi-sector project, “Multi-Sector Rehabilitation Initiative in Jisr-Ash-Shugur” that aims to improve access to education and health care services, while enhancing food security in the area, through rehabilitation and restoration works.
The project is expected to:
- Improve access to education services.
- Improve access to health care services.
- Enhance food security levels.
- Improve unemployment rates.
This will be done by implementing the following activities:
- Rehabilitating the only agricultural education facility in the area, by:
- Conducting civil works to repair damaged structures including walls, roofs, doors and windows.
- Rehabilitating water, electricity and sewage networks to ensure safe and functional infrastructure.
- Renovating and fully equipping laboratories, classrooms and outdoor training fields to support practical agricultural education and technical training.
- Supplying and installing furniture, IT equipment and laboratory tools for teaching and training.
- Improving school surroundings including access paths and outdoor training areas to enhance safety and usability.
- Rehabilitating an automated bakery, by:
- Conducting civil and mechanical works, including the restoration of damaged structures, utilities and production halls.
- Reconstructing the water, power and sewage systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Installing one new automated production line to expand output, meeting the needs of around 90,000 individuals.
- Setting up a solar power system to ensure the continuity of operations during electricity shortages.
- Installing fire suppression, monitoring and safety systems in compliance with public safety standards.
- Furnishing administrative offices and landscape areas to improve the site conditions and facilitate access.
- Restoring outpatient clinics at one hospital, by:
- Rehabilitating 20 rooms, including nine specialised clinics, a laboratory, a pharmacy, a radiology room and administrative offices.
- Conducting civil, mechanical and electrical works to restore full functionality and safety compliance.
- Supplying medical furniture, diagnostic equipment and IR systems for effective service delivery.
- Rehabilitating a doctors’ residence, to provide accommodation for medical staff and improve workforce retention.
- Implementing safety and infection prevention measures, including appropriate ventilation and fire safety systems.
- Generating short-term and long-term employment opportunities.
This is anticipated to:
- Improve access to basic essential services.
- Revitalise the local economy.
- Improve livelihoods and living conditions in the area.
- Improve local food production and sustainability.
- Enhance food security and ensure consistent access to affordable bread.
- Ensure sustainable service delivery.
- Strengthen the local health system.
- Promote the use of environmentally friendly sources of energy.
- Contribute to the early recovery, social stability and long-term community resilience.
With a budget of around EUR 2.22 million, this project is expected to benefit 450,000 individuals, over a period of eight months, through strengthened community resilience and long-term recovery.
