Progress Made in Implementation of an SRTF Solid Waste Management Project in Quneitra Governorate

Turkey – Tuesday, 13 June 2017 – The SRTF Management Unit announced today that extensive repair and maintenance works were carried out to operationalize heavy machinery and equipment for use in solid waste removal activities in Quneitra Governorate. Working in close coordination with local councils, the implementing entity of the SRTF “Solid Waste Management and Rubble Removal in Eight Communities in Quneitra Governorate” project completed repairs of 4 tractors and wagons using spare parts provided by the project for one year.

Worth a total of EUR 3.157 million the project seeks to address the lack of machinery to remove piles of debris and solid waste that have accumulated along roads and squares of townships during the conflict, prevent environmental pollution and ensure proper landfill waste management.

The project is expected to improve pest control and prevent epidemics caused by pests, improve public health by decreasing the prevalence of disease (e.g. leishmaniosis) and preventing the outbreak of diseases, such as cholera and hepatitis A, via proper sanitation practices. In addition, it will also provide job opportunities for citizens and their families and will directly benefit some 157.400 inhabitants of the eight targeted communities.
