The SRTF Completes a Contract of Soft Wheat Delivery to SPEG in Support of Food Security in Aleppo Governorate

Turkey – Tuesday, 31 July 2018 - The SRTF Management Unit (MU) delivered the last shipment of a total of 5010.14 MT soft wheat to the Syrian Public Establishment for Grain (SPEG), the implementing entity (IE) of the SRTF’s “Complementary Project for Enhancing Food Security in Aleppo Governorate” project today. The delivery was carried out across the Turkish-Syrian border in coordination with the Turkish authorities.

The current shipment completes a contract of supplying 5000 tons of soft wheat to targeted project areas in the north of Syria. Imported soft wheat is used to produce soft wheat flour, which is normally mixed with local hard wheat flour to produce high quality bread. SPEG will ensure milling of the imported wheat at SRTF-procured milling plants and distribution of wheat flour to bakeries in the governorate.

With a budget of EUR 5.1 million, the project aims to tackle food insecurity caused by the shortages of supplies in northern Aleppo countryside. With approximately 90,000 beneficiaries, the project will increase bread production, reduce bread prices for beneficiaries and is expected to boost the local economy in the targeted areas of the governorate.
