The SRTF Director General Addresses the Meetings of EU’s Madad Trust Fund in Brussels

Brussels – Wednesday, 6 December 2017 – Eng. Hani Khabbaz, Director General of the Syrian Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) attended the 6th Trust Fund Board Meeting and the 7th Operational Board Meeting of European Union Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis (the Madad Fund) held in Brussels today.

 

The Board discussed the current political situation in Syria and the region, the achievement of Madad Fund projects, the Fund’s priorities for 2018, and options for the future of the Fund. It also addressed the “state of play on contributions, voting rights and the financial situation" of the Fund. The Board was also briefed by representatives of the World Bank and the SRTF on their interventions in the Syrian context.

 

Discussions during the Operational Board meeting focused on a series of interventions for a total value of approximately EUR 140 million. The interventions include strengthening the long-term resilience of subnational authorities in countries affected by the Syrian and Iraqi crisis and improving the livelihoods and food security of host communities and Syrian refugees through the development of sustainable agricultural practices. The Operational Board also discussed a “Regional Development and Protection Programme” for Syrian refugees and host communities in the Middle East as well as action to enhance protection and food security for migrants and refugees in the Western Balkans. Other actions discussed during the meeting covered Madad’s support for building 10 schools and for the “West Irbid Waste Water Network Construction Project” in Jordan.

 

Addressing the Trust Board, Mr. Khabbaz briefed the board on the situation inside Syria, presented an update on the SRTF operations and achievements, and illustrated the ways in which the SRTF has overcome many challenges in order to effectively rehabilitate infrastructure and restore public services upon which the lives of millions of vulnerable people depend.
