The SRTF Launches Its First Project to Tackle Wastewater Problems

Jordan – Tuesday, 8 November 2016 – The Management Committee (MC) of the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF) has approved its first project to address the lack of efficient sewerage networks in the project’s locations. The “Rehabilitation of Wastewater Networks in Aleppo and Idleb Countryside -Phase 1” project will deal with the root causes of several public health problems. These include a substantial lack of wastewater networks and a lack of maintenance of existing systems in the rural areas, resulting in frequently sewage-flooded streets and roads and spreading insect-borne diseases.
Worth approximately EUR 6.2 million, the project aims to rehabilitate approximately 36km of sewerage networks located in 15 locations of which 12 locations in Aleppo Governorate and three in Idleb Governorate. It will carry out an assessment of existing networks, rehabilitation requirements, extension works, excavation works, pipeline lengths, filling works, etc. The project will also measure, build and rehabilitate network lines, including connection points and pipes in new and existing sewerage networks.
The project will substantially improve the living conditions in the selected towns and communities by reducing the presence of greywater in residential areas and related health problems. This will directly benefit some 336,850 permanent residents and a large number of IDP families who currently reside in the selected project locations.
