The SRTF Delivers Garbage Collection Tools Under its Solid Waste Removal and Management in Aleppo Governorate – Phase 1 project
Turkey – Monday, 8 August 2016 – The SRTF Management Unit today delivered a large quantity of garbage collection tools to the implementing entity of its “Solid Waste Removal and Management in Aleppo – Phase 1” project. The delivery took place at a zero point on the Turkish-Syrian borders in coordination with the Turkish authorities.
The project aims to contrast the risks of disease proliferation and to improve the living conditions of the local population by rehabilitating the solid waste management sector. The sanitation and hygiene standards in the governorate have deteriorated following the ending of the regime’s support to the sector at the start of the conflict.
Today’s delivery is part of a larger effort that also includes the supply of hydraulic refuse collection vehicles to transport waste, equipment to transport waste from temporary to permanent landfills as well as rehabilitation and proper management of these landfills.
At a total cost of approximately EUR 2.3 million, the project is expected to enhance pest and rodent control, prevent the outbreak of epidemics (such as Cholera) and improve public health through regular and timely sanitation services. The project will also prevent environmental pollution and offer job opportunities for unemployed people. Overall, some 450,000 people are expected to benefit from this project.
